Acupuncture1. What is Acupuncture? “Classical” acupuncture was developed in China and is one component of Traditional Chinese Medicine. It involves the insertion of very fine needles through the skin and tissues at specific points. 2. Do the needles hurt? Acupuncture needles are extremely fine; two or three would fit inside the barrel of a regular hollow needle used for injections. Although each patient reacts differently most patients feel minimal discomfort as the needles are inserted, some feel no pain at all. Once the needles are in place there is often be no discomfort at all. 3. What type of training do the therapists have? Are they registered? Our therapists who use acupuncture must be certified either through the Canadian Acupuncture foundation or through the Faculty of Extension at the University of Alberta. They must also be included on the Acupuncture Registry with the College of Physiotherapists of Alberta. 4. Why are needles inserted far from where I am having pain? Acupuncture points are based upon energy channels defined by Traditional Chinese Medicine. 5. Is there a risk of infection? Our facilities use only sterile single use needles for treatment so the risk of infection is absolutely minuscule. 6. When can I expect to feel results? Some patients will feel immediate relief of their symptoms, for some it may take a few hours and for some a few days. For more complex or longstanding conditions significant relief may take somewhat longer. 7. How many treatments will I need? Each patient and condition reacts differently to treatment. You may find that only a few treatments will be required. You may find that one to two treatments per week for several weeks may be required for significant and sustained relief. You therapist will discuss your treatment plan with you at your assessment and throughout your course of treatment. 8. Who pays for acupuncture? Acupuncture treatments are not covered under the CRP. As a private service you would be required to pay for your treatment at the time of service. You may seek reimbursement from any private insurance that your may have. Nor Med Therapies will provide you with any documentation you require for reimbursement. It is advisable that you determine any coverage you have for both physiotherapy and acupuncture prior to your first appointment. |
